Has anyone else used the Johnstone’s Trade Aqua Guard? I’ve been using water-based satinwood for the last few years after switching from oil-based products due to the yellowing issue.
The problem I have with most water-based satinwood paints is the overall finish and durability. Water-based doesn’t turn yellow, but you seem to lose something else.
Johnstone’s Aqua Guard is different though. You need to use Aqua Undercoat before you apply the satinwood. This helps the Aqua Guard stick to old paint and takes care of how the paint covers. Once you’ve undercoated, you can apply a coat of Aqua Guard.
Another reason I like this paint is because it takes less coats than other water-based satinwoods. You normally get away with one coat of Aqua undercoat, and one coat of Aqua Guard.
The only real drawback of Johnstone’s Aqua Guard is it can run slightly, so you need to be careful when you’re applying it. I like to use a good-quality roller to paint the big bits. That way the paint is nice and even.
Did I mention that Johnstone’s Aqua Guard comes in tinted colours? Not just that, but you can have colours from other brands tinted into Aqua Guard if you order online (click here to see online prices).
Aqua Guard is one of the best water-based satinwoods around if you use it in white, but tinted colours are another level! You don’t see stringy brush marks when using it in dark colours like you do with comparable products, and the coverage is fantastic!
It’s hard to describe the finish. No brush marks or roller marks; it just sits like a coloured film. It looks gorgeous.
I have used a lot of similar products over the years, but nothing comes close to Johnstone’s Aqua Guard. I use it for all the woodwork in my home now, and it looks fabulous every time. It is a trade product, so it’s expensive shopping at Johnstone’s Decorating Centre unless (unlike me), you can get a trade discount. It is normally far cheaper to buy Johnstone’s Aqua Guard online.
