Why would you want to highlight the soil pipe on a house like that? Surly it’s not the ‘feature’ you want to ‘pop’ on the outside of a home?
Would it not be better to paint it all white, so it blends in?
I’m wondering whether this is just a Northern thing, or do people try and make a feature of soil pipes everywhere in the UK?
I’ve been manning the BBQ for a good hour.
The only reason I’m posting this is that as I sit down to eat my burger, my seat in the garden is 6 inches from the obvious soil pipe on my neighbour’s house, and the thing is going off about every 10 minutes. I wouldn’t have even noticed it if they had painted it the same colour as the rest of the house. It’s putting me off my food!
It’s safe to say that I’m against highlighting soil pipes. I know they’re normally black when they’re new, but painting them is an easy fix. As a professional Decorator, I can take you through the process.
If you intend to blend the soil pipe with painted masonry on the rest of the home, then you should avoid gloss, and opt for eggshell or satinwood.
Plastic soil pipes do not need to be undercoated like exterior timber does, simply because plastic doesn’t expand and contract like timber does. However, I have found that coating plastic pipes with an adhesion primer will ensure your finish will last.
Then, simply coat them in an exterior eggshell. I like to use Sandtex X-Tra because I find it lasts. The colour tends to fade when I use other eggshell paints.
Painting a soil pipe like this will avoid people from noticing it all together. I don’t know why more people don’t do it.
