Does anyone else hate painting and decorating their home? Don’t get me wrong, I’m very house proud, and I love the results. There is no better feeling than choosing a colour scheme, putting it into practice, and it turning out great. Websites like Farrow and Ball and Decorating Centre make picking colours easy. It’s just the work I don’t like!
I work fulltime. I sometimes use a decorator, but I find it hard to trust someone when it comes to something as personal as decorating my home, so more times than not, I do all the work myself. This often involves working evenings and weekends. But, applying one coat of paint to a ceiling one evening, filling my walls the next evening, then sanding the evening after that…. Let’s just say it gets tedious very quickly and the work tends to lose momentum.
Then you have all the mess that comes with decorating!! Not just to my house, but to me as well! I hate getting covered in paint or breathing in dust. I don’t like wasting clothes, no matter their age. I look a mess at the end of every day after decorating.
Oh, then we have the dust! Which is never confined to the room I’m working in! I tape around my doors to try and seal it in, and I use dust sheets over furniture and my carpets, but it still gets everywhere! I just can’t stop it!
OKOK, we’ve established my decorating work can drag on, but it doesn’t stop there either. I try my best to choose paint colours and wallpaper that suits my existing carpets, curtains, and furniture (which isn’t always possible). However, there are always some things I do need to change. It’s all part of the decorating!
Those things might be artwork on the walls. Or I might need new cushions, or a rug. Sometimes I need a mirror. Fine, I can just about live with the extra cost, but I wish I was one of these people who could visualise everything before they open a tin of paint!
It takes me ages to choose soft furnishings in a room after decorating. I get all the work done, put everything back, then spend 6 months or so deciding what works, what doesn’t, and shopping for things that may or may not suit the room!! I find myself thinking about it constantly! It’s like I’m in purgatory! And there is nothing worse than buying something and it not looking as good as I thought it would!
It’s safe to say I hate decorating my house, but I do get a tremendous sense of satisfaction when a room has been completed and I’m finally happy with it. I just wish I had more time to appreciate all my hard work. I always have rooms in my home that need decorating, or colour schemes that are tired and look dated.
Instead of enjoying the rooms I’ve done, I seem worry about the rooms that need doing. I hate looking at rooms when I know they need decorating. I find myself looking online for colour ideas, working out what sort of paint I should use, or flicking through wallpaper books. All the time putting off the work, knowing full well I’m going to endure months of decorating hell once I start it!
I always think it’s worth spending a little bit more money and choosing paint brands such as Benjamin Moore, COAT, and Farrow and Ball. I’d love to save money when decorating my home, but the results are always better when you use quality paint. Besides which, I always convince myself I deserve it because I’m not paying out for a Decorator.
Then you have the tools. There is no point in buying cheap brushes and rollers because your paint finish will look horrendous. I use proper dust sheets, Purdy brushes, and Axus Décor Silk Touch rollers.
And then there’s everything else! If the carpet and curtains need to be changed, it’s likely to cost me £1,500!! Artwork, cushions, rugs, ornaments…. The list goes on! I’m very houseproud, but the amount of money I spend on decorating puts a lump in my throat. This is another reason I hate decorating my house!
Am I being too pessimistic? It would be interesting to find out whether I’m on my own, or other people hate it as much as I do. Maybe I’m just over-thinking things because I’m sick of all the mess. It just seems to constantly play on my mind. I wish I could just forget about decorating and enjoy my home for a while.
